I’M MOVING TO GERMANY + Sunshine Blogger Award

I'm moving to Germany

A few announcements: I’m moving to Germany

Guys I have some huge, amazing, fantastic news!!!

I just accepted my first full time ‘adult’ job! I’ll be working at an American University in Germany and it was exactly what I was looking for. The timing was perfect as I start right after I’m done teaching. It’s also not too far away (1.5 hours by car) from where I am now in France so I get to keep the friends I’ve made around here. I am so thrilled and excited as it’s very similar to the job I loved as an Undergrad working for my University back home. As an American millennial I’m just glad to have job security for once, insurance and to live in once place. I got a job I know I’ll love and start paying back my student loans!

I’ll probably blog in the future about how I turned my study abroad experience in France 3 years ago into (eventually) a career. And I’ll also be blogging about my very interesting TAPIF experience after I’m done with the program…spoiler alert it hasn’t been wonderful.

Also if you haven’t noticed the blog got a little makeover as I switched to being a self hosted site. New wordpress theme and new lovely header by my friend Nick. You can check out his art here!

I just did another travel tag so I don’t have a lot of people to tag but if you’d like to do this tag you can send me an email if you’re interested. The questions are at the bottom of this post!

Here are the questions:

1. What is your favourite travel quote?

I have so many. As evidence by this pinterest board. However, if I had to pick just one I think it would be ‘Life begins at the end of your comfort zone’ because that’s been something so true to the way I’ve lived my life and grown as a person through my experiences traveling and being abroad.

2. How far in advance do you plan your trips? Share some of your tools and tips for travel planning.

There’s no really set time period sometimes it’s a month ahead sometimes it’s two weeks ahead it just depends.

In terms of tools and tips I have a few pointers! I use GoEuro.com and Rome2Rio.com to plan how to get from point A to point B. From there I’m booking a flight (usually using Skyscanner), blablacar, train or bus. Then comes lodging and I usually use either Airbnb or HostelWorld. I write all of my day to day plans and what time my transit is, then I put these details in the reservation section of the Google Trips app- which is basically the only travel app I use! Then from there I use Google Trips, pinterest and googling to plan where I want to eat, what I want to do and see. Then I plan a loose itinerary using the map feature, download all my tickets and such and get read to go! I think writing it down and having copies help as I like to send a copy to a friend of my plans.

I definitely need to blog about my planning tips and I will do so soon.

3. Is there a kind of place that you always check out while travelling?

Yes actually! Whenever I’m traveling I always try to get the best view and often times I’m scaling a tower or a cathedral or a hill to do so.

My favorite views

Cathédrale in Strasbourg, Arc de Triomphe in Paris, Sacre Coeur in Montmartre in Paris, Berlin Dome in Berlin, St Vitus Cathedral in Prague, the huge hill in Budapest, Sears Tower in Chicago, Empire State Building in NYC. Yeah it’s kind of a recurring theme.

4. What sense (sight, taste, etc.) do you value most while travelling?

I think I probably value sight the most because I definitely love a change of scenery and experiencing new things I’ve never seen before. Or even seeing some iconic sight and having that “wow” moment. After that I value taste because I love trying delicious local food wherever I’m traveling.

5. What blog-related issues frustrate you the most?

Probably trying to figure out SEO which is tricky or when I think I know coding (once upon a time I wanted to be a ‘webdesigner’) and then I screw up my wordpress theme…fun.

6. Your next trip will be to…?

I’m not quite sure but I want to go to the UK, Amsterdam and Brussels by this summer. I have another 2 week vacation (TAPIF perks) and I don’t want to spend all my money so I think I’m going to choose between those two.

Travel Goals for 2017: UK (all of it meaning England, Scotland, Ireland), Amsterdam, Brussels, Besancon (where I studied abroad), back to the US for the holidays.

7. What makes your blog unique and what makes you proud of it?

I think my blog is unique perhaps because of my circumstances. I didn’t really travel at all when I was growing up until I went to college and I studied abroad. Essentially it’s been all me and I’ve found a way to stay abroad. I also am in the domain of solo female travel and budget travel. I try to write about my experiences honestly and not really sugar coat it.

8. What has been your most successful blogpost to date and what has been your favourite blogpost to write?

My most successful blogpost to date has been my recent post about ‘Solo female travel’ as it’s gotten quite a lot of views, 30+ comments and 100+ likes.

9. Which country do you call home? Why people should visit it?

This is complicated because my idea of what ‘home’ is might be different from what most people define it as. My original home or “home home” as we used to call it in college is the beautiful state of Michigan. I totally recommend that people visit Michigan.

My current home is France and I also recommend people visit it. In particular the region of Alsace and Strasbourg. It’s such a beautiful and unique area of France. The architecture, the food, the fact that it’s the only region in France where they produce beer! It’s definitely worth checking out.

10. Is blogging your full-time job? If so, what does “free time” mean for you?

Blogging definitely isn’t my full-time job as I haven’t made any money from it yet. So it’s definitely a hobby of mine but it’s something I want to grow!

11. Are you happy?

In this moment definitely I’m content with life and ready for the next part of my adventure. And I guess being a real actual functional adult living in a foreign country…obviously still figuring it all out.

John Lennon Wall in Prague!

xoxo Liz

Hi! Congrats on getting a job in Germany!! I know it’s pretty difficult to do that and the visa process isn’t easy. I would love to live in Europe so this gives me some hope!! Also, I’m looking into switching to a self hosted site, as well. Was it a difficult process/expensive?? Congrats again on the new job and the sunshine award!

Thank you Tarah! I used Siteground which is a really good value for the price and it’s really not too hard if you follow the directions just google “switch from wordpress.com to wordpress.org”. Also siteground’s support was amazing and so helpful!

Hi! Thanks for sharing your life’s experiences in this blog. I am very interested in hearing about your TAPIF experience. I’ve really appreciated your very honest record in this blog and I would like to hear more of the things that aren’t GREAT about getting to live in France throught TAPIF. I just got accepted a few days ago to teach as an assistant in Strasbourg through TAPIF FROM 2017/2018.
    CHEERS!!
